{"id":6,"date":"2008-07-08T23:59:35","date_gmt":"2008-07-08T22:59:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/interthink.eu\/?p=6"},"modified":"2008-07-25T14:42:37","modified_gmt":"2008-07-25T13:42:37","slug":"this-is-your-captain-speaking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/interthink.eu\/08\/?p=6","title":{"rendered":"This is your captain speaking&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Guess what?\u00a0 The air-conditioning problem we had ten minutes ago has recurred.\u00a0 We&#8217;re going to have to taxi back to the stand and get an engineer to fix it&#8230;we&#8217;re looking at about half an hour&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Not the best start to our adventure, being stuck on a runway at Stansted.\u00a0 Nevertheless, after missing our various flight slots as a result of the pilot&#8217;s a\/c trouble, we arrived at Ruzyn\u011b International Airport rested and raring to go.\u00a0 Actually, we were knackered &#8211; the girls spent the night on the airport floor and the boys got a lift at the crack of dawn.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2392\/2658550316_65e301917b.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"348\" height=\"232\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After buying our first public transport ticket with an obscene amount of Czech currency, we successfully failed to navigate to our hostel, walking in a loop no more than a kilometre away at any given\u00a0 time from our desired destination.\u00a0 Nevertheless, we soldiered on and eventually checked (or should that be Czeched) in to our room.\u00a0 Not the one we reserved, of course, but two doubles and a single, for the same price.\u00a0 Can&#8217;t complain.<\/p>\n<p>In an interesting, quirky turn of events, Stuart Phillips (yes, affiliated with our very own Maz) was in Prague with a friend, who arrived on our doorstep shortly after we had settled in to show us the city. This involved a litre of beer each to start, for less than a bottle of coke, and some odd Czech delicacy (I had beef, cream sauce and whipped cream?) from the equally cheap bistro we stopped in.\u00a0 Starom\u011bstsk\u00e9 n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed was next on the agenda (the Old Town square) and a trip up the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nmsonline\/2658755356\/\">clock tower<\/a> to see the breathtaking view.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3013\/2658608890_68c2800a1b.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"349\" height=\"233\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Returning to our Czech base for a brief nap after a quick tour of the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3226\/2657814755_7320a0e24c.jpg?v=0\">Charles Bridge<\/a>, we pledged to join our new guides for the evening.\u00a0 Gill successfully managed to offend the entire service industry of Prague in the first restaurant we went to, and in the public interest, a dramatisation is as follows:<\/p>\n<p><em>(enter humble waitress&#8230;)<br \/>\nCan I take order?<br \/>\nA Magherita pizza, please.<br \/>\nWhat kind?<br \/>\nWhat kind of Margherita pizza?\u00a0 What do you <\/em><em>mean &#8216;what kind&#8217;?\u00a0 There&#8217;s surely only one kind! I hate you!
